What this year's DH Theatre Fest plays are all about

Last Updated 25 November 2017, 14:50 IST

1. The opening show of the Deccan Herald Theatre Festival is 'Mother Courage and Her Children' - This play by German playwright Bertolt Brecht, produced by QTP and directed by Quasar Thakore Padamsee, has been getting rave reviews across India. Deccan Herald Theatre Festival brings the play to Bengaluru for the first time. The play has Arundhati Nag in the lead, playing the role of Mother Courage along with theatre veterans such as Asif Ali Beg, Aseem Hattangady, Keith Sequeira, and more.

2. Having had a successful stint in the Kannada movie space with films such as Lucia and U-Turn, director Pawan Kumar returns to the world of theatre with his play 'The Woman in Me'. Set against the backdrop of a man who is coping with the death of his wife, this play explores the age-old concept of a man being in every woman and vice versa in an interesting manner.

3. Having portrayed various Bollywood characters with panache, actor-director Prakash Belawadi tries his hands-on Girish Karnad's 'Boiled Beans on Toast' for the first time in Bengaluru at Deccan Herald Theatre Festival. Based on six/seven characters from various walks of life in Bengaluru, the play follows the lives of these characters as they collide unexpectedly, and careen off each other.

4. Prashanth Nair's 'A Funny Thing Called Life' is an amalgamation of 6 vignettes from our everyday lives. These sketches come together to form a funny joke and you are left wondering how did it come to this. Produced by Tahatto, this play has been doing the rounds successfully, has earned a reputation as a laugh-riot, and is sure to leave you in splits.

5. Vandana Prabhu takes the German play, 'A Little Calm Before the Storm', by Theresia Walser where three characters are waiting in the green room to play the role of Hitler on stage. Since the moderator is late, they get talking and through perfidious word-play and dark humour, a clash of cultures between the old and new emerges.

6. This year Deccan Herald Theatre Festival has been curated by Sandbox Collective, an organization which has put together various national and international festivals like Kamshet Arts Festival and many more.
