A 32-year-old man was on Thursday arrested for sexually assaulting an SSLC student  in Yelahanka.

The accused has been identified as Vimal Sharma, who works as a carpenter. Sharma, a native of Bihar, resides  in Yelahanka New Town.

According to the police, Sharma is a friend of the victim's father, who died  six months ago. But he continued to visit the victim's house and was providing them with financial support. Her mother works as  a domestic help.

Taking advantage of the situation, the accused sexually assaulted the 15-year-old victim when she was alone at home. He repeated the heinous crime for months,  and  threatened the victim he would kill her mother if she  said anything  to anyone, the police said.

Recently, there was a workshop on the prevention of sexual assault at the girl's  school, and the teachers told the  students to speak up  if anyone has been sexually assaulted. The victim then told her teacher about the incident.

Later, the teacher and the NGO that  conducted the workshop filed a complaint with the police, based on which  Sharma was arrested and booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) 2012.
