DH 2017- Bengaluru goes pink for women-friendly city tag

Get set to see a whole lot of pink in Bengaluru in the coming year!
Last Updated 05 December 2017, 14:41 IST

There are several reasons proposed to answer as to why the colour pink is associated with girls and women. Mamie Eisenhower's rhinestone-studded pink ballgown or Jackie Kennedy's iconic pink Chanel suit are few instances that are pointed to for the popularisation of the trend. Whatever the reason might be, in the 21st century, the colour has now, for better or for worse, formed a gendered identity.

In 2017, Bengaluru embraced the colour to launch a slew of policy initiatives geared for advancing women safety. From pink autos to pink cabs, to pink police patrol cars and even pink parking spots, get ready to see a whole lot of pink in Bengaluru in the coming year!

Here are few of the pink initiatives that DH reported on:

Mayor plans pink toilets in the city
The city might soon get pink toilets. Bengaluru Mayor R Sampath Raj plans to study about setting up pink toilets for women in the city, similar to the New Delhi model.

Women-driven Hoysala patrols coming soon
City’s pink Hoysala patrol vehicles will soon be driven by women constables. This initiative aims at reaching out to women and child victims of crime.

For safe commute, women in city can hail pink autos
BBMP plans to launch pink autorickshaws in the city, exclusively for women who are not accompanied by men. These autos driven by women will begin service in the city from the new year.

Pink parking: Driving empowerment
Women drivers are to get parking reservations on Brigade Road. 'Pink Parking', a new initiative by BBMP, is an aim to give women a respite from the trouble of having to hunt for parking spots in busy areas.

Women's seats in BMTC buses to go pink
In addition to the reserved ladies’ seats, BMTC will have pink seats for women. The government has taken the decision following complaints from women of men occupying ladies’ seats in the city’s buses.
