A first division assistant was pushed to death by his friend on Wednesday night near the police quarters in Nandini Layout.

According to the police, they were arguing over a financial matter.

The victim has been identified as Uday Kumar (34), a native of Maddur in Mandya district.

The Nandini Layout police arrested Raju Kadakola (36), a native of Gokak in Belagavi, in connection with the murder.

Kumar had given a hand loan to Kadakola, who was employed in the  health department, the police said.

"Kumar  had joined the police department five months ago under the compassionate appointment scheme, following the death of his father, who was an ASI in Nelamangala. He came in contact with Vittal Lokapur, who was working as an  office assistant in the DGP's office. It was through Lokapur that Kumar became acquainted  with Kadakola. With the department's permission, the three were staying in the police quarters in Nandini Layout," an officer said.

On  Wednesday night, they had  consumed alcohol at a party. After the party, Kumar  asked Kadakola to return his money. This led to a heated argument, following which  Kadakola  pushed Kumar  from the top floor of the building. Neighbours rushed a bleeding Kumar  to hospital, but he was declared brought dead.

Nandini Layout police arrested Kadakola and booked him under IPC section 302 (murder).

Kumar  is survived by his wife Gauramma, a police constable, and two children. They reside in  Maddur.
