Elephant herd goes amok, kills one, injures 2 others

A herd of elephants roaming about in the forests around Channagiri taluk in Davangere district has gone on rampage, killed one man and injured two others on Friday morning.  

Police said Eshwara Naika, a farmer was killed by the elephant that gored him with its tusks near Hosanagara village while he was busy working in his fields.  The Basavapatna police have registered a case.  

In a related incident, police said Ganesh (42) was attacked by a tusker while cutting grass at Tyavanige village, Channagiri taluk.

The animal gored Ganesh in the stomach. His relative Jagadish who was with him escaped.  Ganesh has been admitted to a local hospital.  

A third man Ashok was also attacked by a pachyderm. He sustained minor injuries.  

Forest department sources said that the herd of elephants are headed for the Joldal forests.
