A class IX student, who was forcibly married to his widowed sister-in-law in Gaya district, committed suicide two hours after the wedding.

The victim, Mahadev Das, was studying in a government high school and was not comfortable with his family's decision to marry him off to 25-year-old widow Ruby Devi.

Ruby's husband Santosh, Mahadev's elder brother, died due to electrocution. Ruby has two children.

After Santosh's death, Ruby's parents wanted her to return home but her father-in-law insisted that she stay back with her in-law's.

After some time, Ruby's mother and her father-in-law asked her to marry her Mahadev, who was 10 years younger.

Though Mahadev resisted the proposal, saying he wanted to study, he was forced to marry.

"The wedding rituals took place at the village temple where we exchanged garlands. In the evening I slept but suddenly woke up due to a commotion. I was told that Mahadev has committed suicide by hanging himself with a towel," said Ruby.

The police have registered an FIR against nine people who attended the wedding.

"We have also charged them with inciting the boy to commit suicide," said a police officer.
