Recognition for selfless service, unique achievement

In remote villages that lack easy access to modern healthcare facilities, she is seen as a savior for pregnant women, and this 'delivery expert' (known as Soolagitti in Kannada), while leaving her home to offer a delivery care to a needy in a nearby village, prays the god that the delivery be smooth.

Rami Roopa Gouda of Kamage in Sagadageri Gram Panchayat in Ankola taluk of Uttara Kannada district has offered successful delivery care to hundreds of needy, poor women selflessly. Rami Gouda is one among those selected for this year's 'Avva' award, to be presented by the City-based Avva Seva Trust.

Along with Rami Gouda, Devappa Mahadevappa Morey of Kadanakoppa in Kalghatagi taluk of Dharwad district, a dwarf who come from a poor background but has achieved excellence in sports at the international-level, will also receive 'Avva' award. He won gold a medal in world dwarf games held in Ireland, and to participate in that event, he had to mortgage his fields. Athlete, cyclist and swimmer Shrikanth Deshpande of Hubballi, who won 'Iron Man' competition held in Malaysia, is another sports personality being honoured this time.

The list of this year's 'Avva' award winners has several such wonders, and motivating examples of achievements and social service. Praveen Shivegouda of Magarahalli in Channarayapattan, who showed traditional and organic farming can be profitable, and agriculture expert D T Patil of Mavanur are also being honoured.

Senior journalist Padmaraj Dandavati, noted poet V C Airasanga who is known for his simplicity, vocalist Sujata Gurav, entrepreneur B V Lakshidevi, social worker B L Patil, theatre artiste Annapoorna, theatre personality Seetha D Chappar, environmentalist Panchayya Virupakshayya Hiremath, industrialist and social worker Shantilal Ostwal, and entrepreneur R M Daragad will also receive 'Avva' award.

Function today

The eighth death anniversary of Guravva Shivalingappa Horatti and 'Avva' award presentation ceremony, organised by the Avva Seva Trust, will be held at Gujarat Bhavan at Despande Nagar in Hubballi on Saturday (December 16) at 10:00 am.

Trust Vice-Chairman and Navalgund MLA N H Konaraddi told media persons here on Friday that Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce President Sa Ra Govindu would present the awards, while artiste Roopa Iyer would inaugurate the function, columnist S Shadakshari would release the calendar, while Sri Panditaradhya Shivacharya Swamiji of Sanehalli would grace the occasion.

Mr Konaraddi noted that the trust headed by MLC Basavaraj Horatti is striving to promote family values and love towards aged parents, and is honouring achievers and social workers every year. 'Avva' award includes Rs 5,000 and citation, he added.

Trust Secretary Shashi Sali, and others were present.
