Volunteers clean garbage, remove posters

More than 100 volunteers participated in the cleanliness drive by Ramakrishna Mission in front of Cascia High School and Mangaladevi on Sunday.

Shivakumar, CA led the group of volunteers cleaning the area in front of Cascia High School and Mangaladevi car street. They removed the plastic, paper and other waste on the road.

Rathna Alva led a group of volunteers in a door-to-door campaign creating awareness among the citizens about garbage segregation and cleanliness by distributing awareness handbills.

The area in front of Cascia High School is meant to be used as a footpath, but has been neglected and become garbage disposal ground. Children and pedestrians were not able to use the area and were facing a lot of hygiene problem due to the garbage problem. Interlock was laid on the broken footpath. The electric transformer in the middle of the footpath was a hurdle to many pedestrians and even resulted in small accidents. Hence, a new railing has been erected around the transformer. A small garden with flower pots was also laid beautifying the locality of the Cascia school.

Other areas

The volunteers also removed illegal posters, banners, buntings and other publicity materials that were ruining the beauty of the city. They carried out such work at Valencia, Kankanady, Balmatta, Bendoorwell, St. Agnes, Kadri, Kadri Park, Nanthur, Hampankatta, Kodialbail, MG Road, Lady Hill Road and other main roads.

Volunteers of Ramakrishna Mission Swacchata Abhiyan had arranged a cleanliness drive at Ekkur too. The drive began in front of the Ayyappa Swami Bhajana Mandira. The cleanliness drive was organised in several villages like Kotekar, Konaje, Ullal, Permannur, Someshwara, Munnur and Manjanadi under the guidance of Ramakrishna Mission in association with Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat.

Cleanliness contests

Awareness programmes were conducted in nearly 87 schools in the month of December. About 8,825 students participated in the Swacchata Spardha competitions. As many as 3,177 students participated in essay competitions, 4148 in drawing and 1500 in debate competitions.

The drive was inaugurated Dr Rajendra Prasad and NRI Ullas Hiremath in front of Cascia High School at Marnamikatta area. Swami Ekagamyananda, convener of Swacchata Abhiyan and others were present.
