Dr Shantharam Shetty chosen for 'Karavali Gaurava Prashasti'

Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada district Karavali Utsava Samithi has chosen orthopaedic surgeon and Nitte Deemed to be University Pro Chancellor Dr Shantharam Shetty for Karavali Gaurava Prashasti 2017-18.

A press release said that the award is being conferred for his contribution to the field of medical education and health sector.

The award will be conferred during the valedictory of the Karavali Utsav at Panambur beach on December 31.

Dr Shantharam Shetty obtained MBBS degree from Mysore Medical College in 1965 and MS (Ortho) degree from Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi. He served as professor and head of the department at KMC from 1980 to 1997. He has trained more than 300 postgraduate students in Orthopaedics.

Achievements

He was the first vice chancellor of Nitte (Deemed to be University). An active academician, he has presented over 150 scientific papers at international, national and state conferences. He is also the president of the Indian Orthopedic Centre.

Dr Shetty is recipient of several honours and fellowships such as Karnataka Rajyotsava Award for meritorious service in the field of Medicine in 1991; AO Fellowship in Germany in 1983; AADO Fellowship of Netherlands and UK in 1996; Ranawat Fellowship of USA in 1989; International Lions President Award for the work for physically handicapped; Indian Medical Association Award for meritorious service in 1999; International Lion President's Award for Leadership in 1996; Rotary Vocational Service Award in 2000; Vandana Award (Rotary) for meritorious service in the field of Medicine 2004.
