Members of Malaprabha, Mahadayi, Kalasa-Banduri Raitha Horata Okkuta staged a rasta roko on the national highway at Gabbur Cross on the outskirts of the City on Wednesday, demanding speedy diversion of water from Mahadayi basin to Malaprabha river.

Due to the road block which lasted for around 45 minutes, vehicular traffic was obstructed, while police officials rushed to the spot.

Raising slogans, protesters asked people's representatives to forget party politics and to raise a united voice for the implementation of the project, by resolving the inter-state dispute fast.

"Politicians lack concern about farmers, and therefore, the project is delayed, forcing the farmers to run a continuous agitation in the region. BJP MPs from the State should pressurise the prime minister to intervene to convince Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, while leaders of other parties should also join hands," said the Okkuta President Lokanath Hebsur.

Subhashchandraguda Patil stated that farmers would teach a befitting lesson in elections to MPs who fail to raise voice about Mahadayi issue. Former prime minister H D Deve Gowda should also raise the issue of water scarcity in the region in the Parliament, he added.

Hemanagouda Basanagoudra, Babajan Mudhol, Corporator Altaf Nawaz M Kittur, and others took part in the protest.
