The biggest blunder committed by town planners was to permit haphazard housing colonies in the city, G Jasmail Singh, secretary, Institution of Engineers, said on Thursday.
At a discussion with citizens and urban planners, he said the road width was not kept in mind while forming these colonies. This is the main reason for the congestion on the roads.
"Electricity and water supply problems are just a ripple effect," he added.
Urban planner A S Kodandapani said the BDA was going vertical, but the master plan doesn't address the issues of road width and the Floor Area Ratio (FAR).
