Handmade is the way of life: Irrfan

Last Updated 06 January 2018, 19:27 IST

Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan is well-known for his exceptional contribution to cinema, which he calls 'a work of his mind and body' and termed the art as 'handmade'.

He was speaking at the national symposium on the 'The Handmade', organised by Graama Seva Sangha at the St Joseph's Institute of Management Auditorium on Primrose Road.

Khan said that embracing the art of handmade is the right way to live, as it is close to nature. However, handicraft workers today, struggle for their existence and have no confidence in the system. The country will be more beautiful if everybody turns to handmade goods, he said.

To a question on why does the Bollywood not take the responsibility to promote handmade products, Khan lamented that it is because of the changing times. "After the country's independence, the directors and producers entering the industry were enthusiastic to bring a change in the society. But today, the films do not reflect the real-life and it is even wrong to expect a message from these movies," Khan said. Leading art director, M S Sathyu expressed his discontent over the levy of  18% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on tickets for theatre and performing arts.

"After paying rent for the halls, artists are not left with sufficient revenue even for themselves," he said. He urged the artists to take up this cause.
