Environment Day at Manipal, NMPT

Chancellor Dr Ramdas M Pai flagged off a jatha from the University building. The students later planted saplings near the hockey ground of the Manipal Institute of Technology.

Speaking on the occasion, Manipal Institute of Communications Director M V Kamath said that protection of the environment should begin at home. “Isn’t it a good feeling to see a nice garden growing in your own backyard?” he asked and urged the students to use every space available to have as much greenery as possible.

Pro-Chancellor Dr H S Ballal said that the aim of the varsity is to have a green and clean campus in which they have been successful.  VC  Dr Raj Warrier also spoke. Dr G K Prabhu proposed a vote of thanks.

At NMPT

The New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) celebrated the World Environmental Day on Friday. NMPT Chairman P Tamilvanan presided. Eminent zoologist and academician Dr N A Madhyastha was the chief guest. NMPT Chief Engineer (Civil) M R Hedaoo spoke on the significance of World Environment Day.

In his key note address, Dr Madhyasta emphasised on the impacts of global warming, depletion of ozone layer, the importance of bio-diversity and responsibilities of the citizens to protect the environment.    

In his presidential address, Tamilvanan informed about the measures taken by the Port to control the pollution. He requested the port users to initiate action not to spill the cargo and avoid pollution by dust. He asked the chief engineer to explore the possibilities of rainwater harvesting in the port.
