A 30-year-old cab driver, based in the UAE, was arrested for murdering his girlfriend and mother of two children at her house in the city on December 26, 2017, after she refused to marry him.

The Kamakshipalya police tracked the accused, Mohammed Mubeen Sheikh, who was on the run, in Karwar.

The police said the victim, Taslima Banu, and Sheikh are from the same village near Sirsi and they were in a relationship before her marriage. But Sheikh was arrested and sent to judicial custody in 2006 in a land dispute case. Taslima was married to her distant relative and moved to Bengaluru.

According to the police, Sheikh, after his release from jail, went to Dubai to work as a driver, but continued to be in touch with Taslima over the phone and would even meet her whenever he came to Bengaluru. He also gave her costly gifts, including jewellery.

Problems arose after he asked her to marry him. She avoided Sheikh, saying she would consider the proposal, the police said.

On December 20, Sheikh came to Bengaluru and visited Taslima's house on December 26 when she was alone. He asked her to marry him. But when she rejected him, he got angry and stabbed her repeatedly, killing her on the spot. He escaped with all the valuables and gifts he had presented her.
