KSPCB recommends closure of two units

S Lalitha, Bangalore, April 22, DHNS:

The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has recommended closure of two major industries in the State and suspension of operations in three others for failing to adhere to environmental standards.

These recommendations find place in a report on industries it has submitted to the government recently.

The Environment department had last year (2009) identified 25 industries for non-conforming with the Water and Atmospheric Pollution Act and asked the Board for a status report on them. A high-level committee headed by Chief Environmental Officer Simha has readied the report and submitted it to the Environment and Ecology department by May end.

The report calls for closure of Krsna Energies, a lead battery unit based in Bommasandra Industrial Area in Bangalore and Metropolitan Overseas Limited (nature of operations not specified) in Hirehalli Industrial Area of Tumkur for violating norms prescribed under the Act.
The Board has also recommended suspension of activities of these two industries for polluting water by not installing adequate treatment systems: Sree Sreenivasa Textile Processing Limited, Dasanapura in Bangalore Urban district and Priyadarshini Textile Process House, IInd Stage, Peenya Industrial Estate. Suspension for S P R Sugar Private Limited in Kanchugaranahalli of Bidadi in Bangalore Rural district has also been recommended for not adhering to environmental norms.

The Board’s Chairman A N Sadashivaiah said the government was yet to initiate any action against these industries. “However, since the polluting industries had been identified, the Board has the authority to take suitable action against them,” he said.
