100 trees to be translocated

Last Updated 14 January 2018, 18:50 IST

More than 100 trees, which would have to make way for the metro project, would be translocated to areas in the Bommanahalli Assembly constituency.

Union Minister Ananth Kumar said translocation was essential to save the green cover. He was speaking at the inauguration of the Bangalore One centre at BTM Layout 4th Stage.

"Many trees have been cleared for the metro project. In the next phase of the project, 108 trees have been marked for felling. Instead of cutting them down, we have sought their translocation to different parts of Bommanahalli constituency. Work is already under way for the translocation of 56 trees in Bilekahalli," said Kumar, who handles the chemicals  and fertilisers and parliamentary affairs portfolios.

This comes days after metro officials announced that they would translocate 185 trees at a cost of Rs 19.88 lakh to make way for the Gottigere-Nagavara line. Of this, 131 will be planted at the Shantiniketan Park, while 54 would be shifted to IIM(B).
