Gang assaults cops, flees with loaded rifle

Last Updated 19 January 2018, 11:04 IST

An armed gang assaulted two constables and made away with a loaded rifle in Kodigehalli on Thursday.

Paramesh and Siddappa, both attached to the JJ Nagar police station,  were on their night rounds when they received a message about a gang moving about in a suspicious manner at  9th Cross in Tata Nagar. They reached the spot on their Cheetah patrol bike, and tried to apprehend the gang.

The gang attacked them with iron rods and knives.

Paramesh sustained what appeared to be a fracture to his hand as he was assaulted with iron rods, while Siddappa was attacked with a knife. The constables fell on to the ground.

One of the men in the gang snatched a loaded rifle from one of the constables and sped away.  According to the police, the gang members snatched the weapon as they feared they would get shot at and not because of their notoriety.

The injured policemen alerted the control room, following which reinforcements arrived on the spot.

Soon after the incident, the police set up barricades and began combing the area.

"We have formed special teams to track down the gang and nab them soon," said Seemanth Kumar Singh, additional commissioner of police.

The incident comes a day after constable Rajendra (50) was attacked by a gang in JJ Nagar. He is recovering in hospital.
