Last Updated 21 January 2018, 17:38 IST

If all goes as per plan, two Indira Canteens will start serving food for people in the city in a fortnight. Works on the Indira Canteen are on in full swing.

While one canteen will come up at the premises of the PWDoffice, another will be housed at the District Health Office (DHO). The works of the canteen have already commenced and the authorities plan to open the canteen within 15 days.

Earlier, the canteens were planned to open on January 27 but works got delayed. One of the canteens was planned near Lakshmi Janardhana temple near Holalu Circle in the city but due to opposition from BJPleaders, the authorities shifted to another place.

The canteens will have their own kitchen and the local body will provide the basic infrastructure facilities, said Assistant Executive Engineer Prathap. The process of tenders have been completed and Mandya City Municipal Council will supply drinking water, electricity and construct underground drainage system, fencing and also appoint security personnel. CCTV cameras will also be installed in the two canteens, authorities said.

Municipal Commissioner T N Narasimha Murthy said that as per norms, the canteens should be developed at places where public movement is high and thus the PWDand DHO office premises have been selected.

The places are close to the bus stand, railway station and market, he said.

It may be mentioned that nearly 10 canteens opened by different political parties have been supplying food for people at low prices.
