Santoshi upsets fancied Sanjita

M Santoshi of Railways upset her team-mate and favourite K H Sanjita Chanu to clinch the gold in the women's 53kg category at the national weightlifting championship here on Monday.

Santoshi, who finished second behind Sanjita in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in Gold Coast, Australia, in September, emerged winner with a total lift of 185kg (81kg in snatch and 104kg in clean and jerk).  

Sanjita settled for the silver with a total effort of 183 (80+103) while Manipur's S Bindyarani Devi finished third with a lift of 178 kg.

In the men's 69kg section, Deepak Lather of services bagged the top spot with a total of 259 (115+144). M Raja of Railways registered a total of 258 to be second while Karnataka's Manjunath completed the podium with a total of 284 (124+160).

There was a close contest in the men's 62kg category, where Railways' Sushant Sahu edged out team-mate M Raja. Sahu lifted a total of 259 kg, just one kg more than his rival.

69 kg: Deepak Lather (Services) 288 (132+156), 1; Achinta Sheuli (Bengal) 286 (133+153), 2; Manjunath (Karnataka) 284 (124+160), 3.

Women: 53 kg: M Santoshi (Railways) 185 (81+104), 1; K H Sanjita Chanu (Railways) 183 (80+103), 2; S Bindyarani Devi (Manipur) 178 (78+100), 3.

58 kg: K Shireesha (Railways) 195 (84+111), 1; Harshdeep Kaur (Punjab) 192 (85+107), 2; Harjeet Kaur (Haryana) 188 (83+105) 3.
