Dakshina Kannada ZP CEO Dr M R Ravi has said that a proposal has been submitted to the government to set up an eye bank in the district Wenlock Hospital.

He was speaking at a programme on mental health education and eye donation organised by the district administration, zilla panchayat, Department of Health and Family Welfare and district Wenlock Hospital here on Tuesday.

In the last nine months, 12,405 volunteers have pledged their eyes in Dakshina Kannada. Awareness programmes on eye donation have been organised which received good response from various organisations and NGOs. Many have come forward to pledge their eyes. "Eye donation is a noble act and mission. A considerable number of Indians suffer from significant impairment of vision. Donated human eyes help preserve and restore sight through corneal transplantation," he said.

He said that a special drive is being organised to identify leprosy patients in the district. People should make use of the drive and extend their support in ridding the district of leprosy.

ZP president Meenakshi Shanthigodu and DHO Dr Ramakrishna Rao were present.
