Advocates call off relay hunger strike

BENGALURU, DHNS: The relay hunger strike by the state's legal fraternity was called off on Thursday.

President of the Bengaluru Advocates' Association A P Ranganath said that they decided to call off the hunger protest based on the information received from credible sources that the central government has cleared the appointment of 5 judges out of the 10 judges recommended by the collegium.

The notification stated that the central government has assured that the appointment of the remaining judges will be cleared within a week's time.

The senior counsels, bar council members, the executive committee of the association and former presidents of the advocate association convened a joint meeting on Thursday to discuss on the future course of action in pursuant of the strike.

During the meeting, it was resolved to temporarily suspend the relay hunger strike that began on February 5 and to demand immediate appointment all judges cleared by the collegium that is pending before the central government.

The body also resolved to form a delegation headed by the senior counsel B V Acharya to meet the new chief justice of Karnataka High Court and demand the recommendation of at least 20 names from the bar to be elevated as judges to fill up the judicial vacancies forthwith.
