NHRC seeks 'factual report' over human rights violation by Shopian protesters

DH News Service, New Delhi, Feb 9 2018, 21:20 IST

The National Human Rights Commission on Friday sought a "factual report" from Ministry of Defence over allegations of violation of human rights of military personnel by protesters in Jammu and Kashmir.

Acting on a complaint filed children of two Lt Colonels and a retired naib subedar, the NHRC said it wanted to know the present status of the situation and steps taken by the Centre on the points regarding "humiliation and violation" of human rights of the army personnel.

The complaint came following registration of an FIR by the Kashmir Police against army personnel following their action against stone-pelting protesters in Shopian on January 27.

The complainants have sought the NHRC's intervention for an appropriate enquiry in the "recent incident of stone pelting and assault by an unruly and disruptive mob on the army personnel", an NHRC statement said.

Raising the issue of the safety of soldiers and officers of the Indian Army, deployed in insurgency-hit areas of Jammu and Kashmir and other states, it said, the complaint sought to draw its attention to the "innumerable and frequent" instances of violation of human rights of army personnel.

The complainants claimed that the administration has "failed to safeguard" the human rights of the members of the armed forces.
