Even though the state government has reserved sufficient funds for the conservation and development of lakes, the historic Veerammaji lake in Narasimharajapura, has not seen any development so far.

The ancient lake, situated at the heart of Narasimharajapura, is locally referred to as 'Irammajji' lake. According to historical records, it was built during the regime of Keladi rulers and Veerammaji (1757-1763).

Keladi rulers had constructed lakes and wells for their subjects. An administrative officer by the name Sangappa had constructed seven wells, out of which the majority are in a depleting condition.

The present Halepete region situated at the East of the lake was the then Veerammaiji Pete. The lake covers an area of 13.30 acres and never gets dried-up. But the lake is filled with silt.

Town Panchayat member Anjum said that there are plans to erect a protective fence around the lake and to construct a walkers' path for the benefit of visitors. Desilting will be carried out and steps will be taken to purify the water from the lake. If the government releases additional funds, it will be taken care that the sewage water does not get mixed with the lake water.

Town Panchayat chief officer Kuriakose said that a decision has been taken to develop the lake and the decision has been submitted to the project officer and added that the government should release the necessary grants.

The residents said that the historic lake should be reconstructed by the Department of Archeology. Desilting of the lake should be carried out at the earliest.
