Two entries in first metro car reserved for women says BMRCL

Two doors in the front car of Namma Metro trains will be reserved for entry/exit of women at a few stations from March 1, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) said on Wednesday.

The announcement was made by BMRCL Managing Director Mahendra Jain after Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) handed over three cars at an event attended by state and central ministers.

"Each metro car has four doors. From March 1, the first two entrances of the front car will be earmarked for women on an experimental basis. However, there is no segregation of passengers inside the car. The idea is to ensure convenience for women while entering or exiting the train," he said.

Bengaluru Development Minister K J George, who flagged off a truck hauling one of the three coaches, said the three coaches will undergo a series of tests before they are deployed for commercial operations.

"BMRCL has placed an order for 150 coaches. The coaches have been delivered ahead of schedule to allow us to complete the tests. BEML will supply six to nine cars a month from June and will deliver the entire 150 cars by December 2019," George said.

To a question, the minister said people can ride the first train with six coaches within the next two months, after BMRCL gets clearance for the same by the commissioner of railway safety.
