Govt okays tourism dept's house boat, floating canteen proposals

Last Updated 16 February 2018, 09:55 IST

The state government has approved tourism departments's ambitious proposal to introduce house boats and floating canteens on rivers and seas abutting Karnataka coast.

The tourism department has proposed to introduce house boats similar to the ones in Kerala and Kashmir on Kali river, Sharavathi and at Mangaluru.

"This is the first time we have proposed this. This is different from caravan tourism and cruise tourism. We are hoping that there will be no coastal zonal regulation issues on this. However environmental impact and clearance for this will be required," a tourism official said.

The department has been struggling to introduce coastal tourism for very long, but it has been delayed because of environmental norms.

The budget of the tourism department this year has been dropped from Rs 570 crore to Rs 459 crore. The department officials are unhappy with this, but look at it as a challenge to generate more funds from their various models.

Mysuru Haat

On the lines of the famous Delhi Haat, the tourism department has got clearance from the government to create a Mysuru Haat.

"A haat is nothing but a forum for designers, handicraft experts and sellers to sell their handicrafts and works. It is very popular in Delhi in Hauz Kauz village. We were keen to recreate them in north and coastal Karnataka, but they have given permission only for Mysuru only," the official said.

Film tourism

To promote film tourism, the department is coming up with feature film tourism policy.

Here the department will help producers get locations and also the department wants to promote locations where film shooting is done prominently.

The department wants to lay thrust more on places where film shooting is done so that producers from other states and countries come to Karnataka.
