Govt doles out sops to backward classes

Ahead of Assembly elections, the state government has attempted to use funds in the Social Welfare department and Backward Classes department to reach out to all backward communities in the state.

Several buildings and memorials have been proposed in the name of various community leaders. 'Dr B R Ambedkar Spoorthi Bhavana' will be set up at a cost of Rs 25 crore near Vikasa Soudha for the social Welfare department.

A memorial in the name of a revered figure from Ramayana, Mathanga Maharshi ,will be set up in Hampi at a cost of Rs  1 crore. Memorials will also be constructed at Rs  1 crore each in the names of former ministers and Dalit leaders Mallikarjuna Swamy, K Prabhakar and K H Ranganath.

Rayanna authority

In memory of Sangolli Rayanna, a Kranthiveera Sangolli Rayanna Pradhikara (authority) will be set up. The authority will take up development works in his native Sangolli and his place of martyrdom Nandagada ( both in Belagavi district) at a cost of Rs 267 crore.

Apart from memorials, several schemes for the backward communities have been announced in the budget.

In order to strengthen SC/ST cooperative societies stronger, the government will provide 100 eligible societies 50% of the share capital or maximum of Rs 10 lakh.

Landless Devadasis and 680 manual scavengers will be given priority in sanctioning loan and subsidy under Land Purchase and Ganga Kalyana schemes.

For eradication of untouchability, the incentive for intercaste marriages have been increased.

A Scheduled Caste boy marrying a girl from another caste will get an incentive of Rs 3 lakh while the incentive for SC girl marrying a boy from another caste has been increased from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. Similarly, incentive to marry children of Devadasis is Rs 5 lakh for female and Rs 3 lakh for male.

To encourage SC/ST students to get admission to national-level institutes, coaching will be provided to 100 boys and 100 girls who secure first class and above in the SSLC examinations.
