The Supreme Court on Friday declined to initiate contempt proceedings against Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tamil Nadu's plea for failure to ensure the release of Cauvery river water to the state.

"We do not intend to proceed with the contempt petition against the respondents (chief minister and others). It stands closed accordingly," a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices Amitava Roy and A M Khanwilkar said in a separate one-page judgement.

Tamil Nadu has in a petition filed in 2013 sought intiation of contempt proceedings against the Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
