6,592 candidates attend job fair

Disha, a job placement drive organised by the district administration, in association with Centre for Entrepreneurship Opportunities and Learning (CEOL) and Alva's Education Foundation, Moodbidri, on Mangalore University campus, received a good response on Saturday.

A total of 6,592 candidates attended the drive. As many as 130 companies took part in the placement drive. The number of candidates who were selected for jobs on the spot was 331 and the total number of shortlisted candidates was 1,718.

Among the candidates, 1,107 had SSLC/second PUC qualification, 432 with ITI, 729 with diploma, 1,458 with PG, 2,781 with undergraduation and 85 with medical and paramedical qualification.

As many as 169 rooms at the Mangalore University were used for the job fair. Three hundred students of the Alva's College, 60 staffers of the college, 50 students of KPT and PG students of Mangalore University served as volunteers.

Companies, representing IT and ITeS, banking, and financial services, sales and retail, manufacturing, hospitality, education, NGO and automobile recruited the candidates.

The fair catered to the employment needs of students who have passed with qualifications such as SSLC, PUC, degree, postgraduate and other courses except engineering.

Inaugurating the fair, District In-Charge Minister B Ramanath Rai said one gets job based on the merit and professional competency. A person hailing from poor background too can get good job through his/her effort.

He said Indian students have a lot of scope abroad. The government has been supporting the education sector by providing various benefits, he added.

Minister for Food and Civil Supplies U T Khader said that the state government has released Rs 50 lakh for this placement programme.
