Art for the soul

Though Ashwini Vinayraj was interested in arts and crafts since childhood, she did not think of it as space where she was meant to be. But despite going on to get a degree in engineering, she now finds herself in this field “ happy and content. "I quit the software industry to pursue my passion, which also allows me to spend time with my kids," says Ashwini, who now blogs for leading craft companies and is also a guest designer for some of them.

The artistic journey started 12 years ago with water colours and charcoal that were used to create intricate Tanjore paintings. Now her interests have morphed to decoupage, scrapbooking, altered art and journalling. She is currently dabbling in acrylic paint pouring techniques.

When it comes to decoupage, she is working on unique name boards and antique clocks. "I especially love creating name boards as those are the first things someone sees when they come to your house. When it comes to gifting, customised clocks and jewellery boxes are also very popular right now," she says, adding that her favourite themes are floral and antique.

When asked how she ensures that her creations stand out in a field which is quite crowded, Ashwini says, "I ensure my products stand out by using the best quality materials available, most of which are imported. I go personally once a year to places like the US, Thailand or Philippines to pick and choose raw materials I like or I ask my friends to get these for me. As a result, everyone loves my works."

She credits the support she receives from her family as an important aspect for her to explore her creativity. Now she is taking classes and workshops to pass on the benefits of art to as many people as possible. "I want people, especially children, to turn to art to combat stress in their lives. It is fun and liberating."
When asked about the requirements to be a good crafter, Ashwini lists patience first of all.

"And an in-depth knowledge of different colour combinations will stand you in good stead too. One should be enthusiastic and aim to be different. Mostly it should satisfy your own soul," she says before reciting the abiding principle of her artistic journey so far -- 'Craft with passion, with an expectation of soul satisfaction'.
