Rajasthan Hacking: Shambhulal Regar posts videos claiming threat to life

Last Updated 19 February 2018, 12:39 IST

Shambhu Lal Regar, an accused of killing Muslim labourer from West Bengal Mohammed Afrazul in Rajsamand, has made two videos from Jodhpur Central Jail, claiming a threat to his life.

In the two videos which are being circulated on social media, Regar alleged that a prisoner from West Bengal could try to kill him. The release of the video on social media raised several questions on jail authorities and has termed it as a major security breach.

In two videos Regar alleged that a suspicious prisoner named Vasudev Brahman has shifted to his cell and may attempt to kill him. He further said that several prisoners in the jail are in touch with ‘jihadi elements’ from Pakistan and Bangladesh. He also said he doesn’t regret the crime he had committed.

In the latest videos, Regar wearing a black hoodie and equipped with earphones appears to be reading from a pre-written script of the hate-filled statement. Regar said in the video, "I can't tolerate threats to Hindu women. I have spoiled my life but I have no regrets for whatever I did".

Shambulal Regar had murdered Afrazul Khan on December 6 last year and filmed the act with the help of his minor nephew (15-year-old). In a series of videos, Regar had termed the murder as ‘love jihad’. He has been booked for murder, outraging religious feelings, and criminal conspiracy, among other charges.

In a charge sheet filed in January by the Rajsamand police said that Regar had an illegitimate relationship with the woman whom he referred to as his ‘Hindu sister’ in the videos.

The jail officials are trying to track down the mobile phone. However, so far police have said that no phone or any device has been found in the jail or cell where Regar is kept. Superintendent of Jodhpur central jail Vikram Singh confirmed, "The mobile phone used to film the video hasn’t been recovered yet but police are in search of the device. He might have used someone else's device".

Police have also ruled out that there is any danger to Regar's life, "These are mere allegations and his life is not under threat or danger", Singh added.

However, a senior prison official told DH on basis of anonymity, "The primary investigation reveals that the backdrop in the video resembles the texture of the washroom walls of the jail and there could be a possibility that the video has been filmed there".

At present Regar has been shifted to a separate cell. Incidentally, self-styled Godman Asaram Bapu, who is accused in a rape case is currently lodged in the same jail.
