Plea against use of polyester-based adhesive labels on liquor bottles

A a city-based non-government organisation for waste management has moved the high court against the use of polyester-based excise adhesive labels on liquor bottles.

A division bench headed by Justice H G Ramesh was hearing a public interest litigation filed by Ramprasad, a social worker and Rajesh Babu, secretary of the NGO Swaccha.

The petitioner challenged the use of these labels saying that they were non-biodegradable and non-recoverable.

The petitioner sought the court's direction to quash the impugned tender notification for the production of polyester-based holographic excise adhesive labels vide tender issued on January 3, by the state excise department for the production of polyester-based excise adhesive label instead of paper-based hologram embedded excise adhesive label.

The matter was adjourned to Tuesday.
