The Supreme Court on Wednesday would hear plea filed by Kerala actress Priya Prakash Varrier for quashing of criminal complaints lodged against her and director of Malyalam movie 'Oru Addar Love'.
With the release of video of song on February 9, an FIR was lodged in Hyderabad on February 14 and complaint was filed with Mumbai police as well for hurting religious sentiments. Her plea contended the cases violated her fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression.
Advocate Haris Beeran mentioned the petition before a three-judge bench presided over by Chief Justice Dipak Misra for urgent hearing.
The bench, also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud put the matter for hearing on February 21
The petition jointly filed by film director Omar Abdul Vahab and producer Joseph Valakuzhy Eapen, relied upon the apex court's order in case of movie 'Padmaavat'.
The petition contended the song "Manikya Malaraya Poovi" is a Mappila Song, or a traditional Muslim song from the Malabar region of Kerala, which praised the love between the Prophet Mohamed and his first wife Khadeeja. It is a part of the Muslim tradition in Kerala and does not offend any religious sentiment of any community or person.
