The Congress on Wednesday accused the Modi government of "backstabbing" honest taxpayers by announcing a reduction in the interest rates on employees' provident fund savings.

"Post 2014-15, this has been the second such reduction; interest rate on EPFO has now been reduced twice from 8.75% (in 2014-15) to just 8.55% now," Randeep Singh Surjewala, in-charge of the AICC communications department, said in a statement here.

He hit out at the Modi government for indulging in "organised fleecing" and "legalised pilferage" on ordinary citizens.

Surjewala said since coming to power, the Modi government has cut interest rate on small savings schemes, including public provident fund, National Savings Certificate and Kisan Vikas Patra.

In addition, multiple bank charges including on withdrawal of cash from ATMs, charges on cash deposits have been levied by the Modi government over the last four years, he said.

"Only one year is left now and the people of India are surely readying to give a resounding answer to Modi government's anti-people policies," Surjewala said.
