Ahead of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's visit to the Golden Temple on Wednesday, stray dogs in Amritsar were tranquilised in order to avoid their sighting on the Heritage Street.

Nearly a dozen dogs were rounded up and tranquillised by a veterinarian after which they were put in a van and taken away.

The local civic authorities caught some of the street dogs easily, while others were drugged during the special drive. By evening, these dogs were released back at the same place from where they were picked up in the morning.

Authorities said they had coordinated with the People for Animal group for the special drive.

Meanwhile, the dog lovers in the city are crying foul over this kind of 'drug treatment' meted out to stray dogs even as it authorities claim that they had all the necessary approvals.

The pet lovers allege that the drive to catch stray dogs usually takes place as part of the sterilisation and anti-rabies shot programme. They said this sort of exercise was an attempt to showcase a picture-perfect model to the visiting VIP by concealing the real picture of the city.

Sources said stray dogs were given milk and bread after they were released by the team on Wednesday evening.
