Mangalore varsity to confer honorary doctorate on Prof Subra Suresh

Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) president Prof Subra Suresh has been chosen by Mangalore University for its honorary doctorate.

It will be conferred on him by Governor Vajubhai Vala at the 36th annual convocation of the university February 26.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, vice chancellor K Byrappa said that the university had recommended eight names, of which, one name for honorary doctorate has been approved by the governor.

Prof Subra Suresh will deliver the convocation address. During the convocation, Mangalore University will award 97 Doctor of Philosophy degrees (Arts- 17, Science- 74, Commerce- 4 and Education- 2). As many as 45 gold medals, 75 cash prizes will be given in addition to 242 Ranks, out of which 65 students are 1st rank holders (PG- 48 and UG –17 Arts- 17; Science and Technology- 33; Commerce- 10; Education- 2 and PG Diploma- 3).

36,280 candidates

He said a total of 36,280 candidates appeared for the examinations and 26,164 (72.12%) have passed. Out of 6,323 candidates who appeared in PG courses, 5,929 (93.77%) have passed and out of 29,843 UG students who appeared, 20,122 (67.43%) have passed and in PG Diploma course out of 17 candidates who appeared, 16 (94.12%) have passed.

Out of 5,929 PG students who have passed, boys account for 1,871 (31.56%) and the girls represent 4,058 (68.44 %). Similarly, at the UG level, out of 20,122 candidates who passed, 6,970 (34.64%) are boys and the remaining 13,152 (65.36%) are girls. As far as PG Diploma examinations are concerned, out of the 16 candidates who passed, 6 (37.5%) are boys and the remaining 10(62.5%) are girls.

Performance

As far as total performance in the examinations is concerned, out of 26,067 (Except PhD) candidates who passed, 9,129 (35%) account for distinction, 9,129 (35.00%) are first class, 6151 (23.60%) are second class and the remaining 1,658 (6.40%) belong to pass class. Of 26,164 candidates who passed, 2,963 (11.33%) (PhD-97, PG-680, UG-2187) will receive their degree in person.
