JOIN USSoon, 353 traffic signals in the city would be upgraded to the Vehicle Actuated Adaptive Signals (VAAS) that can regulate itself to traffic flow.
The city traffic police have already installed 35 lights in the outskirts in the first phase of the project.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) R Hithendra told DH that the government had approved upgrades to the traffic signal in the entire city. "We have called for tenders to implement it," he said.
"People have responded positively to the adaptive signal lights. Apart from the existing 353 traffic signals, a further 100 new traffic junctions have been identified to install the new system," he said.
Hithendra also said the traffic police would scrap all the old signal lights made by the public sector undertaking, Bharat Electronic Limited. "People are not happy with the signal lights," he said.
The police are also inviting ideas from the public and entrepreneurs to resolve the traffic issue in the city. "Anyone interested to take part in the technical evaluation for the new traffic signal tender can send their ideas. We might involve people with the right credentials in the process," Hithendra said.
VAAS' camera-based sensors gauge the number of vehicles and automatically adjust the waiting time at the signal.
The cameras capture traffic density at the junctions and transmit it to the sensor lights. All traffic signals are linked to enable the smooth flow of traffic. The signals will give priority to emergency vehicles like ambulances and fire tenders.
