A 'purr'fect love story

Last Updated 25 February 2018, 16:29 IST

"One small cat changes coming home to an empty house to coming home" - these words were said by the famous Australian poet Pam Brown in her novel 'Utterly gorgeous cats'. A very similar situation has taken place in my life too.

I first met my cute and sweet little cat Tommy on a fine Saturday evening. My mother and I usually go for a walk to a park which is near to our home. On our way back home, we saw a very tiny white and grey-haired kitten walking along the footpath, crying loudly.

The panicked 4-week old kitten was starving and was wandering on the street, in the hope that it would find food somewhere.  The hungry kitten was so feeble and weak that it didn't even have enough energy to walk. But  it was crying as loudly as it could, in order to grab the attention of people who may then give it some food. It was quite sad to see that none of the people who saw this sight seemed to be bothered by it.

I couldn't bring myself to desert the little one and hence I decided to adopt him. I brought him home and we named him Tommy. He was skinny and malnourished but his health gradually improved once we started feeding him healthy food such as milk and fish.  Now, he has grown up to be a confident and handsome big cat.

Since then, Tommy has been a part of our family. I used to take  him  outside so that he can interact with the natural world instead of being indoors all the time. Many cats really enjoy being outdoors, contrary to the popular belief that they like being in the house. Taking your pet outdoors for some exercise can be beneficial for both of you.

In order to develop a healthy relationship with your pet, spend some quality time playing with it. This will strengthen the bond between you  both and create a positive feeling within you. Interaction with your pet is the ultimate cure to a stressful life.

But don't shop, adopt. Adopting a stray cat is an act of compassion and consideration. It is an opportunity to experience a feeling which lies buried  deep down in our hearts.

As told by the poet Anatole France, 'Until one has loved an animal a part of one's soul remains unawakened'.
