The MD of an educational foundation was taken into custody in connection with the communally  provocative course content adopted in schools run by the foundation.

M  M Akbar, an Islamic preacher and the managing director of the Kozhikode-based  Peace Educational Foundation was detained in Hyderabad by a Kochi-based police team.

In January, the state government had ordered the closure of Peace International School, run by the foundation, in Ernakulam.

The police had issued a lookout notice against Akbar, who has been absconding for over a year.

Sources said Akbar was brought to Kochi late in the evening.

Reports said he was intercepted by emigration officials at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, where he was scheduled to board a flight to Doha.

In October 2016, based on a report filed by the district educational officer, a case was registered against the management of the school under section 153A of the IPC (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, language, etc and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony).

Two months after the case was registered, police had also arrested three representatives of Burooj Realisation,  a Mumbai-based group which published the controversial textbooks included in the school's syllabus with the  alleged intent  of radicalising  the children.

The school had initially come under the scanner for its links with a case in connection with 21  people who had gone missing from Kasaragod and Palakkad districts, in 2016, allegedly to join IS.

Abdul Rashid, one of the missing people, was also employed in the school's public relations wing.
