Last Updated 25 February 2018, 18:02 IST

The indefinite protest organised by members of the Dalit Sangharsha Samithi demanding basic facilities to tribals of Devarapura Paisari colony, at Gandhi Maidan in Madikeri has entered the third day on Sunday.

On the first day of the protest, Social Welfare Department officials came and tried to persuade protesters to withdraw the protest. On the second day, Deputy Commissioner P I Sreevidya visited the protesters and said that a case in the court is posing a hurdle in providing basic facilities to the Devarapura Paisari colony. She said that only temporary facilities can be provided. Demanding permanent facilities, the protesters continued the stir.

DSS district convener V R Rajanikanth said, "a temple committee had tried to clear the residents from the paisari land. The temple committee has approached the court. The government which was supposed to support the residents is silent on the issue."

Land encroached

He said that over 110 acres of land have been encroached upon by the rich in Devarapura. The district administration should conduct a survey and reclaim the encroached land to be distributed among the poor.

Owing to the lack of road and fear of wild animal attack, the children in the colony have no access to education, said a villager, Kumar.

About 150 families who have been residing in Devarapura Paisari do not have electricity, road, toilets and drinking water.
