Avail talent from US to emerge as semiconductor industry global player: Manocha

Semiconductor industry veteran  Ajit Manocha exhorted the Indian government to make use of Indian talent in the US to be a global player in the industry.

Manocha, who is also the president and CEO of the global association serving the electronics manufacturing supply chain SEMI, said the electronics and semiconductor industry has grown into a $415 billion industry world over in 2017.  

"India has enough talent pool to become competitive in the software space. But in the hardware, especially in the manufacturing front, the country can seek the help of many of Indian talent available there in the US," he said.  

Speaking at a the  India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) flagship annual event, Vision Summit 2018, he said countries like the US, South Korea, Taiwan and China are moving ahead with their game plan to catch up the market share.

"We have seen companies like Samsung from South Korea beating the US giant Intel in global chip sales. Since we have one-sixth of the humanity living under our jurisdiction, India should consider emerging as a leader in semiconductor-electronics business," he said.  

Karnataka IT and BT Minister  Priyank M Kharge who presided over the inaugural function said  Bangalore has emerged as the hub in the country providing for innovation, entrepreneurship and invention.  

"We have put in place policies and framework to ensure that the ecosystem is favourable to more partnerships, access to funds, ease of business, networking in the domestic and international market and more importantly, inculcating skill sets for the future through our Centre of Excellence within the city," he said.

Kharge also said the government  is working for providing a full ecosystem for Apple to manufacture their products from the state. "We want to protect the investment commitment made by these companies with skilled manpower, ancillary units to manufacture component and conducive   business climate," he said to DH.

He also said along with the support of  IESA, the Karnataka government wants to inculcate a fabless ecosystem to propel the ESDM sector and encourage manufacturing not only in the state but in the rest of the country too.

"We have also providing opportunities through our programme Evevate100 to encourage innovation across all regions of Karnataka," he said.

IESA, in collaboration with  MarketsAndMarkets, launched an  industry report on – Indian semiconductor fabless startup ecosystem  at the this year's  Vision Summit.

The report was launched by IESA Chairman Ashwini K Aggarwal,  Intel India  Senior Director for Strategic Relations and Operations Jitendra Chaddah and  SLN Technologies Ltd Director  Anilkumar Muniswamy.
