Cracking a murder case in 24 hours, the West Division police on Wednesday arrested a 29-year-old beautician and her friend for killing a senior citizen for gain.

Vijayamma alias Vijaya, a native of Mangaluru, was residing in Chamarajapet 5th main. She was murdered on Tuesday afternoon and the crime was discovered on the same night.

A senior official said the police arrested G Sonu (29), foster daughter of Vijaya, and her friend B Kumar (21) within hours after the murder by analysing CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts.

Vijayamma was unmarried and was taking care of Sonu for the past 15 years.

Duo confess

In their confessional statement, Sonu and Kumar said they hatched the plan to murder the elderly woman to get her gold jewels, which, they hoped, would help them tide over their financial problems.

Sonu was working with
Vijayamma and was staying at a paying guest accommodation.

Kumar was an assistant at the PG accommodation in Kempegowda Nagar in South Bengaluru.

The duo strangled Vijayamma with a scarf and struck her with a blunt weapon. They then made away with her gold ornaments.

The police arrested Sonu and Kumar as they were preparing to leave for Mumbai.
