Youngsters at the risk of retinal disorders

Last Updated 16 March 2018, 18:47 IST

Unhealthy lifestyle and poor dietary habits are mostly associated with cardiac diseases, diabetes, hypertension, obesity etc. However, the lesser known fact is that it can also affect your eyes.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) accounts for 8.7% of blindness in the world. AMD is a common cause of severe visual loss in the elderly. However, cases of AMD are increasing among young working professionals.

AMD affects the macula, the most sensitive part of the retina, which is located at the back of the eye. This disease damages the macula creating dark spots in the central vision.

Here are a few lifestyle-related risk factors that can trigger early AMD:

Smoking: Research has revealed that smoking doubles the risk of AMD. It directly damages the eye by reducing the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream connecting the eyes. This results in oxidative stress, which can damage the retina by causing cell death.

Poor diet: An overall balanced diet rich in nutrients, found in leafy vegetables, oranges and yellow bell pepper is recommended, as they contain carotenoids and antioxidants that keep the macula healthy. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, is also considered beneficial for the eyes.

Sedentary lifestyle: Lack of regular exercise leads to multiple heath conditions that trigger the risk factors of AMD. Less movement and constant exposure to computer screens increases the chances of developing retinal disorders.

Ultraviolet rays: UV rays can cause damage to the eyes. It is advisable to wear wide-brimmed hats that shade your eyes or sunglasses that have ultraviolet blocking lenses.
