Woman, daughter end lives in suicide pact

Last Updated 19 March 2018, 19:53 IST

Upset at not finding a bridegroom for her daughter, a 61-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her home in North Bengaluru's Rajajinagar.

The daughter ended her life in an identical manner.

The incident, suspected to have occurred on Friday,  came to light only on Monday.

One of their tenants sensed a foul smell emanating from the house and called the police.

A senior police officer gave the woman's name as Savithramma while her daughter was Devaki (37).

They were living in an own house in  Prakash Nagar, Rajajinagar, and had rented four shops. Savithramma's son Raju was living separately with  his wife in Kengeri.

He had  separated two years ago over a property dispute. Savithramma's husband had passed away  10 years ago.

The neighbours spoke to Savithramma and Devaki on Friday. Police suspect they ended their lives in  a suicide pact immediately  afterwards.

Since both were detached from Raju and other relatives, nobody cared to contact them in three days.

On Monday, one of their tenants, a shopkeeper,  grew suspicious after sensing  a  foul smell. He alerted the police as well as Raju.

Police visited the house and broke open the door and found them hanging.

Their bodies were shifted to the Victoria Hospital for the post-mortem. The women didn't leave any  suicide note.

Police said they were investigating the motive for the suicide.
