The High Court of Karnataka on Monday ordered the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to file a report on the action  taken against illegal slaughterhouses in the city.

A division bench of Justices B S Patil and Sunil Dutt Yadav was hearing a civil contempt petition filed by the Gau Gyan Foundation against the authorities for not obeying the orders given by a  single judge to crack down on illegal slaughterhouses.

The BBMP informed the bench that as per the court's directions, it had investigated 498 meat shops and found 226 of them to be illegal. Notices have been served on illegal meat shops and proceedings initiated against them, the counsel for the BBMP submitted.

The court then ordered the BBMP to explain how many cases it had registered against illegal meat shops for violating the  laws and what further action it had taken against them.

The civic body had earlier informed the court that it was not provided with  inspection vehicles to carry out the investigation.

The  bench then asked for details on the number of vehicles allocated to it at the next hearing.

The hearing has been adjourned until April 11.
