'Entrust responsibility to women and youth'

AICC President Rahul Gandhi has directed KPCC chief and district Congress leaders to identify women and youth, who are active in organising the party and entrust them with important responsibilities.

At the meeting of the Udupi and Dakshina Kannada district Block Congress Committee presidents, and selected leaders of the districts here at Circuit House in Mangaluru on Wednesday, he has reportedly directed them to identify active women in the party and provide them the responsibility of Block Congress president.

Speaking to mediapersons after the meeting, District In-charge Minister Ramanath Rai said, "AICC president has directed to give important positions for women and youth in the party. KPCC chief will take suitable decision on the same."

Rahul Gandhi has also expressed his desire to campaign for election in Belthangady, which was a part of Chikkamagaluru Lok Sabha constituency when his grandmother Indira Gandhi had contested. Gandhi has reportedly directed the DCC to fix a programme in this regard.

AICC president has not visited Belthangady, Bantwal, Puttur and Sullia Assembly constituencies. He has entrusted the responsibility of fixing his tour to these constituencies to AICC Secretary P C Vishnunath. Congress leaders who were in the meeting have appealed to the AICC chief to visit Dharmasthala Manjunathaswamy Temple during his tour to Belthangady.

Rahul Gandhi has also held a discussion on arecanut and has collected information on arecanut crop, its processing, price and usage. The issue of arecanut was discussed, following the statement issued by the Union Minister on the carcinogenic content in the crop.

He also promised to raise the issue of problems faced by arecanut growers in the Parliament session.

'No change of candidates'

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah clarified before Congress President Rahul Gandhi that all the present MLAs from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts will contest the upcoming assembly elections. There is no change in the name of the candidates.

The candidates will be selected for Karkala and Kundapura constituencies. There is no change in the candidate for Sullia constituency.
