A man was arrested for duping a Tirupati-based businessman of Rs 20 lakh after promising a PG seat for his daughter at a medical college in Mangaluru.

The victim, Damodar Rao, stated in his complaint that his daughter Meghana had secured a good rank in NEET exam but failed to get a postgraduation seat for Dermatology.

Damodar, who was depressed, shared his problem with a family friend, Srinivasa Rao, who introduced him to Vijay Ram.

Ram promised Damodar a seat for his daughter at Yenepoya Medical College under the management quota and took Rs 20 lakh last September, the police said.

Ram also promised to reduce the fee through his contacts in the college management.

Damodar realised he was cheated when he discovered that his daughter's name did not appear on the admission list. He then tried to contact Ram but his phone was out of reach.

As the transaction took place in central Bengaluru, the Ashok Nagar police have registered a case.
