Use water judiciously: Krishna Byre Gowda

Minister for Agriculture Krishna Byre Gowda urged citizens including farmers to use water judiciously, failing which they will have to face severe consequences in the days ahead.

Speaking at the inauguration of the state-level agricultural division farmers workshop here on Friday, he said more than electricity and crop price, farmers were worried about water crises.

Citing the example of Kolar and Chikkaballapur where farmers use water judiciously, Gowda said that there was a need to adopt this practice across the state which will help expand the water area two-fold.

No state in India has any programme dedicated to farmers involved in dryland farming. In Karnataka, 70% of the farmers are involved in dryland farming and they completely depend on rain for their water requirement. To help such farmers, the state government launched Krishi Bhagya Yojana. Scientists from across the state have been roped in to help farmers, he said.

Gowda also urged farmers who benefited from the project to come forward and share their experiences with others so that more farmers benefit from the project.

He also appreciated the farmers for adopting scientific methods to increase yield.
