Join hands to make TB-free region: Madhwaraj

Udupi District In-charge Minister Pramod Madhwaraj opined that there is a need for a combative approach complete eradication of tuberculosis.

Speaking after inaugurating the World Tuberculosis Day-2018, organised by the district administration in association with Zilla Panchayat and District Health Department, the minister said that the country is already polio-free. The country is trying to become free of tuberculosis by 2025, on the lines of the World Health Organization's determination of making the world free of tuberculosis by 2035. To achieve the goal, all the stakeholders should join hands and work towards realising the target, he reiterated.

In India, there are more tuberculosis cases reported when compared to the world ratio. It is almost 27% of the patients in India and the death ratio is 34%. It is scary to observe that every two patients are identified in five minutes, he added.

Briefing the details on the number of patients in the district, Madhwaraj said 914 patients were reported in the government hospital and 892 patients in private hospitals. The health care facilities to treat the disease is made available in the government hospital and TB detection units. The district is in the first position in state in detecting tuberculosis effectively. The health care facilities that are required are available in both government and private hospitals. The disease identified at early stage could be cured completely, he said.

Physicians who worked to detect the disease Dr Prithviraj Hegde, Dr Vyasaraja Tantri, Dr Vishweshwara Bhat, Dr G S Chandrashekar, Dr Dinesh Nayak and assistant drugs controller K V Nagaraj were felicitated on the occasion.
