A Dalit civic labourer died after he suffocated while cleaning a manhole at M-Kodi in Kasaba village, Kundapur, on Saturday.

Kundapur police told DH that the deceased has been identified as Sandeep (25), hailing from Thekatte. The incident happened when the accused, Abdul Khader Geelani, called the victim and other labourers to clean the manhole as there was a function at his house on Sunday.

Sandeep was made to clean the manhole, while the other labourers were outside the manhole working on other cleaning aspects. He suddenly slipped and fell into the pit. After some time, the other labourers, who observed that the victim did not come outside, were worried and immediately pulled him out and took him to the hospital. However, he succumbed to death on the way to the hospital. His mother was a former Thekatte gram panchayat member.
