Rahul Gandhi targets Piyush Goyal, wife

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday targeted Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and his wife Seema over investments in their family companies that witnessed a sharp rise in earnings over a 10-year period.

"Mitron, 'Shirdi ke chamatkaron ki koi 'seema' nahi (Friends, the miracles of Shirdi knows no boundaries)," Gandhi said on Twitter and appended reports of Goyal's investments of Rs 1 lakh turning into earnings of Rs 30 crore over a 10-year period.

The BJP rejected the allegations levelled by the Congress as "blatant falsehoods" and an attempt to divert attention from the huge scams the party and its leaders were facing.

The Congress had demanded a judicial investigation by a sitting Supreme Court judge on the Goyal family's investments, which have not been made public by him despite holding a public office.

The Congress said Goyal's wife Seema owned a company that started with Rs  1 lakh capital and has made profits to the tune of Rs 30 crore in 10 years, which they said was "similar to the Jay Shah model of investment", where the company's turnover grew multiple times during the Modi government.

In a statement, the BJP said that Goyal was a "pre-eminent"  chartered accountant and financial advisor before becoming Union minister in May 2014.

It said that Goyal provided consultancy services through Intercon Advisors Private Limited.

"From its founding in 2005-06 to 2013-2014, Intercon earned professional income on services rendered and accumulated reserves of around Rs 30 crore with income tax payment of around Rs 15 crore and service tax of around Rs 6.6 crore," the BJP statement said.

It added that a consultancy company does not require much capital and the reserves were accumulated profit over the years.
